What is a Google Number?

The GoogleNumber is the number of steps it takes to reach Google, starting at the Website. If example.org links to somesite.net, which in turn uses the Google ad syndication system, the GoogleNumber of example.org would be 2: It takes two steps (from the starting site example.org through somesite.net) to reach a Google site.
Note that only sites that are strongly linked to the "Google" brand are considered google sites. Other sites (like blogger.com) that are economically controlled by Google are not taken into account.

Download Googlenobot, the Six Degrees of Google client.

The client allows you to determine the Google Number of sites not already in the database, or to check if the Google Number of a site has changed.

GoogleNobot allows you to publish your findings on this website. The publishing feature is optional. If you do not choose to publish your findings, GoogleNobot will not transmit any data from your computer to the server. If you decide to publish your data, the following information will be transmitted:

The name of the site checked and the starting URL.
The path to Google.
Your IP-Address.

We do not store any personal information about yourself and we do not link the IP-Addresses stored in the database to any other records of IP-Addresses related to this website or the subnet website (for example, webserver access logs). It is only stored to filter out bad submissions.

Installation Instructions

GNU/Linux

You need a Java Runtime Environment installed. If you are unsure if you have such a JRE installed, open a terminal and type "java". If you get an error message, a JRE is not installed. Please refer to Sun's Java Website on how to install a JRE.

Apple OS X

If the dmg-file was not automatically mounted, double-click on it in Finder to mount it. Drag the "Googlenobot" icon to a location on your harddisk and double-click it to start the application.

Microsoft Windows

You need a Java Runtime Environment installed. If you are unsure if you have such a JRE installed, please visit www.java.com, Sun's Java Website. The website will run a detection procedure and advise you how to install a JRE in case none was found.

Source Release

Both source distributions are identical, but compressed with different programs. You can choose the one that fits your platform or personal taste. It contains the complete source of the client application and the SQL-script needed to create the database.

If you are on a non-mac platform, you will encounter difficulties compiling the source, since one class imports classes from the Apple-specific extensions to Java.

To successfully compile Googlenobot on non-Apple platforms, please download the Apple Java Extensions at http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/AppleJavaExtensions/AppleJavaExtensions.html unpack the jar file and include it in your build classpath.

Note that this jar file is NOT required to run Googlenobot and should not be in the classpath at runtime. Its only purpose is to solve NoClassDefFound exceptions at compile time.
